Moving Image

Moving Image

We started to look at moving image and what it is used for. We looked into some old films from directors such as the Lumier Brothers who made some of the earliest films. Most of their films were documentation of normal life situations like a train pulling into a station and people leaving work etc. Some of their other films included early slapstick comedy. The films were too early for audio recording so usually there would be a pianist playing over the top of the video to make the films more dramatic. We learnt that there is two different kinds of audio in films which is Digetic sound (the sound of dialog and things going on in the film e.g. people talking and footsteps) and non Digetic sound (Music and anything that isn't happening in the film). We learnt that film or moving image can be used for animation which allows us to create situations that don't exist or emphasize and exaggerate ones that do. Film can be used for narrative, information, animation and entertainment.

Here we have started to use Adobe Premier which is film editing software. We were given a number of old black and white films to cut down and edit into a short film of our own. We imported the video that we wanted to cut down then we used on the keyboard the letter I for in and the letter O for out. These two tools lets you select a clip of the video to then place into your own video.

Here you can see a window in the middle of the screen. This is how you can change the speed and duration of the selected clip. You can change the clip so it plays in reverse which is what i have done to some of mine. I have placed my clips along the bottom right of the window which is where the new film is being created. Here is a youtube link to my finished video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW6wW4mJXPg&feature=youtu.be)

I learnt a lot about how to edit the moving image in this workshop/session and think that i can take this on and as a skill for the future. It is a useful skill to know how to do as moving image is a important medium of visual communication. A video in some cases can communicate an intended message better than just a still image.

Flash Animation

Our introduction to flash we made simple animations or moving images (GIFS) This is a useful skill to learn in the practice of graphic design as gifs and moving images are used commonly usually in web design and anything that could displayed on a screen. They can be used for I dents for company logos on websites and any kind of desktop advertising or publishing.

We used a website called Flipbook which is a simple animation website which introduced us to basic animation. I made a simple tree growing and apples growing on it and falling. I used around 20 - 25 frames for this animation which is quite basic.

We used the program Adobe Flash to compile images we found on the internet of similar sizes. I chose mostly random images but also ones that have relevance to my personal life. I thought that i learnt a good way of creating gifs, i dents and moving images that could be used in the future for web design and desktop publishing and advertising.

Here is my 50 image gif that i compiled on Flash. I am happy with the outcome and i have learnt the process of creating a gif properly on flash.
